Bioreactors, or biofermenters (biofermentors) are reaction vessels in which all processes take place, i.e. chemical and biochemical reactions to convert the substrate into the desired end product.
Reactions can take place in a bioreactor thanks to the presence of biocatalysts, i.e. enzymes isolated from microorganisms, or microorganisms themselves, animal or plant cells, or parts thereof.
